Our own Blake St. Junior Public School is running currently in the Aviva Community Fund for support to build a naturalized playground at the school. Here is a bit about why they are looking for our support:
Our community is wonderful but it struggles; the average family income for 60% of our students is below $30,000 per year. Even in a large multicultural city some neighbourhoods can be isolated and not have opportunities to engage in regular childhood play.
This playground will increase the amount of safe, natural play space and help draw children out of their homes to create positive connections in their community between the over 40 culturally diverse groups of people who live in the Blake /Jones neighborhood. It will not only produce a beautiful community playground that will be a source of pride for decades to come, but will also help nurture a stronger and healthier mixed income/ ethnic community.
We are in the planning and development stages with the school board, and the parent council is mobilized to help bring this project to life as part of its strategic plan.
As a community hub, Blake Street Public school has active partnerships with the Eastview Community Centre and the South Riverdale Community Health Centre. These organizations work hard to bring much needed services and support to our area, and whose population will benefit from this playground. We also have support from our school trustee, and city councillor. Everyone is behind bringing a new natural playground to our community.
